Blog: Unlocking the Future of the CPA Profession—A Deep Dive into the AICPA Profession Ready Initiative

Welcome back to the Genuine Learning Blog, where we explore initiatives that are transforming the accounting profession. This week, we’re focusing on the AICPA’s groundbreaking Profession Ready Initiative—a new approach designed to ensure the success of future CPAs by closing early career skills gaps and preparing them for the evolving demands of the industry.

How Did We Get Here?

The inspiration for the Profession Ready Initiative traces back to Project RISE 2040, kicked off by the AICPA in May 2025. RISE 2040’s aim was to identify hard and soft trends impacting society and the profession over the next 15 years, with opportunities for proactive change. This global effort engaged over 6,000 participants across 25 countries, including professionals from diverse backgrounds and roles.

Our own Alex Romero, who facilitated several RISE 2040 sessions and now serves on the advisory board, notes a recurring theme: the urgent need for early-career professionals to be adequately equipped for success. The consensus is clear—the profession itself must lead these efforts, shaping the future of accounting from within.

The Objectives: Closing Early Career Skills Gaps

Emerging technologies like AI are reshaping the expectations for those entering the profession. Today, new hires are expected to operate at a higher level, tackling responsibilities that previously belonged to more experienced staff. The core objective of the Profession Ready Initiative? Identify and close these early career skills gaps, so new CPAs are set up for immediate and lasting success.

The Timeline: Exploration to Implementation

The Initiative unfolds in several phases:

  • Exploration (2026): Gathering information, including survey data from practitioners on needed skills for early-career CPAs.

  • Validation & Confirmation: Ensuring the input represents a broad spectrum of practice areas, entity sizes, geographic regions, and types of organizations—from public accounting to business, academia, and industry.

  • Refinement: Analyzing the data and shaping it into actionable recommendations.

  • Exposure Draft (End of 2027): Providing a draft report for comment, identifying any missing elements or overlooked gaps.

  • Final Report & Resources: Publishing the finalized report and launching an online resource hub on the AICPA website to guide firms, organizations, and individuals through practical next steps.

A Diverse Advisory Board

The advisory board features a cross-section of leaders from the profession, including AICPA representatives like Sue Coffey, NASBA’s President and CEO, chair-elect Lindsay Stevenson, Leadership Academy grads, as well as professionals from the Big Four, small firms, business and industry, state societies, and academia. Areas of expertise span audit, tax, AI, nonprofit, personal finance, internal audit, and forensic investigation. This broad representation ensures that the recommendations address every corner of the CPA world.

What’s Next?

The AICPA Profession Ready Initiative marks a pivotal moment for the industry. By focusing research and resources on closing skills gaps at the start of a CPA’s career, it promises to create measurable improvements in professional outcomes. With resources and actionable guidance soon to be available, firms and individuals can take the initiative forward, paving the way for a more robust and future-ready profession.
