AICPA Member Ballot Proposals
Welcome to the Genuine Learning Blog! If you’re an AICPA member, you may have recently received an email invitation to participate in a critical bylaws vote. This is a common process for membership organizations seeking to update their operating procedures. Council can’t make unilateral changes and therefore, they need member approval. The most recent ballot includes two proposed amendments, both of which have the support of the AICPA Board of Directors and Council. These changes were brought forward for membership feedback to ensure broad support and understanding before implementation.
Let’s break down what’s being proposed. The first amendment looks to standardize volunteer periods across the AICPA. Historically, different volunteer roles have started on various dates, for example, Council service might have started immediately upon election. If approved, this change would create a universal start date for all AICPA volunteer roles – July 1st. This would streamline onboarding and handoff processes, providing clarity for everyone involved. The change is set to take effect for volunteer terms that begin in 2027.
The second proposal focuses on membership eligibility requirements. Currently, the bylaws stipulate that new members must have 150 credit hours of education to join the AICPA. This requirement reflected licensing standards that have recently begun to shift in several states, moving back to a 120-credit hour model or introducing alternative pathways to licensure. With evolving state regulations and greater flexibility in the licensure process, AICPA leadership recommends that membership criteria be updated to align with the educational standards for CPA licensure in each individual state. This proposed change would strike the explicit 150-hour requirement and instead reflect whatever education is necessary for licensure, whether 120 or 150 hours, ensuring consistency and access for professionals entering the field under new rules.
If you’re wondering whether you can vote, eligibility is limited to regular members in good standing and honorary members. Student affiliates or other affiliate members are not eligible to participate in this bylaws revision vote. The voting period is open for 60 days, beginning on October 2nd at 8 AM Central Time and closing on November 30th at 11:59 PM Central. Importantly, the voting process is anonymous. An independent tabulator, SBS, manages the ballots, so the AICPA will only receive aggregate demographic data and not individual responses.
For a proposal to pass, it must receive affirmative votes from at least two-thirds of those voting on the proposal, and a minimum of 500 members must vote overall. So, every vote truly does matter, not just for reaching the two-thirds threshold, but also for meeting the required quorum.
This is an important opportunity for AICPA members to have a direct say in the governance of their professional organization. Whether you support the changes or have concerns, your vote will help shape the future direction of the AICPA. As always, I encourage you to review the full text of the proposals before casting your ballot. Participating in this process is a vital part of responsible professional engagement and ensures our bylaws reflect the needs and direction of today’s accounting profession.
Thank you for staying informed and engaged with these important industry developments. Your participation is essential, make your voice count!
